Promoting Freedom of Expression and Respectful Dialogue

The Berkeley Liberty Initiative

For more than a decade, the Berkeley Liberty Initiative (BLI) has promoted the diversity of perspectives at UC Berkeley. The Ambassador Frank E. Baxter Lecture that the BLI hosts annually enriches the university’s intellectual life by hosting leading thinkers whose expertise and scholarship focus on the ideal of freedom in political and economic life. And the BLI creates opportunities for our students and campus community through collaborative events with organizations like AEI, FIRE, and the Heterodox Academy.

The University is not engaged in making ideas safe for students. It is engaged in making students safe for ideas.

Speaking Across Conflict Workshop

Upcoming Event: Speaking Across Conflict Workshop - November 19, 2025 from 3:00-6:00 PM on campus. RSVP here.

Current Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students are invited to participate in the workshop: Speaking Across Conflict, part of the BLI Difficult Conversation Series. The workshop will be facilitated by Dorit Price-Levine, Campus Director of Mediation and Conflict Transformation and supported by Molly Cram, Executive Director of BLI. The workshop content was created by Resetting the Table

The workshop will offer communication skill-building for charged conversations and a forum for dialogue across disagreement. Participants will exchange views and personal experiences, surface differences and commonalities, and practice communication skills for addressing differences directly and constructively. This will be a professional development opportunity as well as a chance to build community capacity to explore disagreements while strengthening relationships.
